This electrophoresis unit has been specifically designed to allow quick and convenient screening of PCR* products. When using a 96 well PCR* machine all samples can be screened on a single gel. Loading is simple using a standard multi-channel pipette. The unit is constructed of 12mm thick acrylic to prevent warping, and is supplied with a UV-transparent tray for easy visualisation. For varying sample numbers a range if alternative combs can be used. As there are 12 comb positions up to 624 samples can be separated on a single gel. Gel casting gates which have a silicone rubber edge gasket, fit into a removable gel casting tray, to provide leak-free pouring. *The PCR process is covered by US patents owned by Hoffman La Roche Inc.

Designed to provide a safe and easy to operate system for the separation of nucleic acid and proteins. The mini unit provides a basic non-cooled single gel system which can be used with any commercially available pre-cast gels. However a silicone rubber gasket (available as an accessory) is required for Biorad® gels. This gasket also allows the casting of gels using ‘non-eared’ or short glass plates. The system comes complete with a set of float glass plates, spacers and a 12 sample comb. A wide range of alternative spacers and combs are also available.

COMPACT, COOLED, DUAL PLATE VERTICAL UNIT

This vertical unit can run two gels or commercially available cassettes for the separation of nucleic acids or proteins. The unit utilises the large buffer volume in the bottom tank to act as a coolant. The running buffer can be pre-chilled prior to electrophoresis or additional cooling can be achieved by utilising a bottom cooling block, which has hose connectors, allowing the connection of the unit to a circulating water bath or tap. Gels can be poured directly in the gel running frame which connects then directly to the top buffer tank. A guaranteed leak-proof seal is obtained using simple sprung damping bars and screws. The complete gel assembly is then placed in the bottom buffer tank and can be fully submerged with the running buffer.

DNA SEQUENCING UNITS

These DNA sequencing units are designed with cabinet style doors and a safety lid to provide easy access for sample loading without compromising safety. All components are shielded and the unit cannot operate until the doors are closed and the safety lid is in place. The units are fitted with a safety interlock as standard. A combination of rubber mounted precision machined aluminium heat transfer plates, float glass plates and clamps, ensure excellent heat distribution and straight sample migration through the gel. A drainage port in the upper buffer tank allows for easy emptying of the running buffer. An optional fan kit provides adjustable thermostatic control of the gel and enables gels to be run at higher speeds. With the fan kit a 20 x 50cm, 0.3.5mm 6% gel can be run at 500C within 1 hour 45 minutes (including pre-run)

A range of Dot Blot and Slot Blot microfiltration manifolds for DNA and RNA filter blot hybridisation and immunological (Ag/Ab) screening applications. These manifolds are machined from high density acrylic with precision lapped mating surfaces. These ensure uniform filter contact and in conjunction with the gasket supplied greatly reduces the possibility of sample leakage. Assembly if the manifolds is achieved simply be aligning the mating screws and tightening the stainless steel thumbscrews. Permanent filter template is provided with each manifold to simplify the cutting of filters to the exact size. A vacuum of approximately 600mm Hg (0.8bar) is required during sample application.

This versatile vacuum gel dryer accommodates 45 x 34cm gel. Multiple small format gels can be dried at the same time. There are two timers on the unit, one for temperature and one for the vacuum pump. The drying temperature can be set between ambient and 90^oC and regulated to +/- 2 degrees C and the drying time set for up to 5 hours in 1 minute steps. The vacuum pump can also be timed to automatically switch off any time up to 5 hours in 1 minute steps. The construction of the unit is extremely robust. The base is cast aluminium coated in Teflon for protection and to assist with the even distribution of heat. The user friendly control panel is constructed from stainless steel for strength. Although solidly built the units are extremely light for easy transportation.

ELECTRO BLOTTING UNITS

Designed to provide a safe and easy to operate system for the transfer of nucleic acids and proteins from a gel matrix onto a suitable transfer membrane. Two sizes of units can be used to blot up to four gels of either 10 x 10cm, 10 x 20cm or 20 x 20cm. The replaceable electrode consists of densely coiled platinum wire which results in the generation of a very uniform electric field. The electrode separation is calculated for optimum transfer. The units have water cooled base and a stirring bar can be placed under the compression cassettes to assist in temperature control. The compression cassettes can be locked to minimise gel movement during their insertion into the tank. An open square grid design for the cassettes provides a maximum area for transfer and is strong enough to maintain a firm contact between the gel and the transfer membrane. If only small gels are to be blotted an optional buffer saver block is available for the EB20 unit.

GRADIENT MIXERS

These small 15 and 20ml mixers are ideal for the preparation of centrifugation gradients using sucrose or caesium chloride solutions.

The mixers are produced from a single block of acrylic. They consist of two chambers, a reservoir and a mixing chamber with an interconnecting valve. A second valve regulates the output flow from the mixing chamber. A magnetic stirring bar is placed in the mixing chamber to maintain a constant gradient. All of the mixers have flat bases to enable them to be placed on a magnetic stirrer. They also have a support rod which can be used to fix the mixers to a retort stand for extra stability.
